How much does a driveway cost in Toronto?
Short answer: a typical two-car asphalt driveway runs $2,400 to $4,600, and the same driveway in interlock runs $8,500 to $17,500. The longer answer is why quotes for the same job come back $6,000 apart, and how to tell which one is honest.
The numbers, by surface
Asphalt — $4 to $7 per square foot. Resurfacing sits at the lower end, a full rebuild with excavation and disposal at the upper. A 500 to 650 sq ft two-car driveway lands between $2,400 and $4,600.
Interlock — $16 to $25 per square foot. The same driveway lands between $8,500 and $17,500. Two to four times asphalt, and it lasts longer and repairs invisibly.
Permeable interlock — $21 to $30 per square foot. Deeper base, washed aggregate, and increasingly required by the City on new or widened driveways.
Maintenance — $1.50 to $3 per square foot. Crack filling and sealing on a driveway that is still structurally sound.
The five things that move your number
Removal of what is there. Taking out old asphalt is straightforward. Breaking out reinforced concrete costs meaningfully more and is the biggest single swing on most residential quotes.
Access. A driveway a truck can back onto is cheaper than one where material is barrowed 30 metres down a side path.
Disposal. Excavated soil and old material have tipping fees, and they are a real line item on any full rebuild.
Drainage. If water pools now, a new surface on the same grade pools too. Correcting it ranges from a small regrade to a drain line.
Permits and stormwater. New or widened driveways can trigger municipal approval and retention requirements, which usually means permeable paving on the new portion.
Why three quotes come back thousands apart
Because they are not quoting the same thing, and almost none of them say so.
The four numbers that separate a $2,400 driveway from a $4,600 one are excavation depth, whether a geotextile is included, granular base thickness, and how many asphalt lifts. A quote that states none of them is not cheaper — it is unspecified.
Ask every quote you receive to write those four numbers down. The ones that will not are telling you something.
This is also why we publish our ranges. Almost nobody in the GTA does, which is exactly why homeowners cannot tell a fair quote from a bad one until the driveway fails.
When the cheapest quote is genuinely fine
It happens. If your existing base is sound and the driveway just needs resurfacing, a lower quote for an overlay is the correct answer and paying for a full rebuild is waste.
The problem is not low prices. It is low prices for work that was described as something else.

How much does a two-car driveway cost in Toronto?
In asphalt, $2,400 to $4,600 for a typical 500 to 650 sq ft driveway. In interlock, $8,500 to $17,500 for the same area. Removal of existing concrete, restricted access and drainage work move both numbers.
Is interlock worth four times the price of asphalt?
It depends on how long you are staying and how the property is used. Interlock lasts longer, repairs invisibly and adds more to resale. Asphalt costs far less up front and, on a proper base, performs well for two decades.
Why is my quote so much higher than the door-to-door crew?
Usually because ours includes excavation depth, geotextile, 150 mm of compacted base and two lifts of asphalt, and theirs does not say. Ask them to write those four numbers down and compare fairly.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway in Toronto?
Replacing in the same footprint generally does not require one. Building new, widening, or cutting a new curb does — and new hard surface above roughly 50 square metres triggers stormwater retention requirements.
When is the cheapest time of year to pave?
Late spring and early fall tend to have the shortest waits and the best conditions. Mid-summer is peak demand and late fall gets weather-restricted.
