Widening & extensions

More parking, within what your municipality allows.

Adding a metre and a half to a driveway sounds like a small job, and physically it is. The complication is regulatory: every GTA municipality sets its own limits on how wide a driveway can be, how much of the front yard can be hard surface, and what has to happen to the rainwater you just stopped absorbing.

The rules that decide what is possible

Maximum driveway width is set by each municipality and often tied to your lot frontage and the width of your garage. Exceeding it is the most common reason a widening application gets refused.

Front-yard hard-surface limits cap what proportion of your front yard can be paved, independent of driveway width. Even where a wider driveway is allowed, this can be the binding constraint.

Curb cuts. Widening the driveway at the street means altering the municipal curb, which is separate approval and separate work.

Stormwater. New hard surface above the local threshold triggers retention requirements — usually permeable paving on the new portion.

We check all four for your address before quoting, because there is no point pricing a driveway the City will not approve.

Matching new to existing

The honest truth about widening an asphalt driveway is that the new section will not match the old one. Fresh asphalt is black; a ten-year-old surface is grey. They converge over a few years but they never become invisible, and there is a seam.

There are three ways to handle it. Accept the seam and let it weather. Resurface the whole driveway after the widening so everything is the same age. Or make a feature of it — run a paver border along the join so the transition reads as design rather than repair.

The third option is the one most people choose once they see it, and it is usually cheaper than resurfacing the whole surface.

Extensions at the back of the driveway

Extending toward the rear of the property — for a trailer, a boat, a second parking pad or a future garage — has fewer regulatory constraints than widening at the front, because it is generally outside the front yard calculation.

It has its own issues instead: access for equipment, existing services, mature tree roots, and where the additional runoff goes. Those get identified on site, and a rear extension is often the easier project of the two.

Questions

How wide can my driveway be?

It depends on your municipality and your lot. Toronto, Vaughan, Markham and Mississauga each set different limits, often tied to frontage and garage width. We check your specific address before quoting.

Do I need a permit to widen my driveway?

In most cases yes, and in Toronto a widening above the stormwater threshold also triggers retention requirements. We prepare and file the application as part of the project.

Will the new asphalt match the old?

No — new asphalt is black and aged asphalt is grey. They get closer over several years but there is always a seam. A paver border along the join is the usual solution and it looks deliberate rather than patched.

Can I just widen it with gravel instead?

Some municipalities permit gravel parking areas and many do not, particularly in the front yard. Where it is allowed it still needs edge containment or the stone migrates onto the lawn and the street within a season.

How long does a widening take?

Two to three days on site for the paving itself. Permit approval is the longer part of the timeline and varies by municipality.
