Choosing paver colour for ten years, not for the showroom.
Pavers look their best on the day they are laid and never quite that way again. Choosing well means picking a colour and finish that looks intentional after a decade of sun, salt and traffic — not one that only works when new.
What changes over time
UV lightens most pigments gradually. Deep saturated colours fade more visibly than muted ones.
Efflorescence puts a white haze on everything in the first season or two. It weathers off, but it is much more visible on dark pavers than on light or mid-tone ones.
Salt residue leaves a pale film through winter. Same story — obvious on charcoal, nearly invisible on grey.
Oil and tire marks are the opposite: obvious on light pavers, hidden on dark.
Which is why mid-tone greys and blended multi-tones are the safest choice on a driveway. They hide both problems reasonably well.
Blends outperform single colours
A blended paver with several tones in the same unit disguises staining, hides minor colour variation between pallets, and makes an individual replaced paver years later far less obvious.
A single flat colour does the opposite. Any replacement will be visible because dye lots change between production runs.
Where to use the strong colour
On the border, not the field. A charcoal soldier course against a mid-grey field gives you contrast and definition, and the border is a small enough area that fading and marking matter less.
It is also cheaper to change your mind about a border in fifteen years than about a whole driveway.
Finish matters as much as colour
Textured and tumbled finishes hide wear, give better grip when wet, and disguise small chips. They are the practical choice for a driveway.
Smooth and polished finishes look excellent when new, show every scuff, and lose grip in ice.
Very light finishes show oil. Very dark finishes show salt and efflorescence. The middle is where things stay looking right.
Practical step before deciding
Look at the paver you are considering on an installed driveway that is at least five years old, not on a sample board. Manufacturers and installers can usually point you to one.
And keep a small stock of leftover pavers from your job. It is the only reliable way to get an exact match years later.

Do pavers fade?
Somewhat, over years of UV exposure. Muted and blended tones show it far less than deep saturated colours.
Should I seal pavers to keep the colour?
Sealing enriches colour and adds stain resistance, and it needs redoing every few years. Do not seal while efflorescence is still present.
What colour hides oil stains best?
Mid to dark blended greys. Very light pavers show oil badly; very dark ones show salt and efflorescence badly.
