How wide does a driveway need to be?

Widths that work

Single vehicle: 3 to 3.7 m. Below 3 m you are opening the car door into a hedge. 3.7 m gives comfortable room to walk alongside a parked car.

Two vehicles side by side: 5 to 6 m. 5 m is tight — doors nearly touch. 6 m is comfortable for two vehicles and someone walking between them.

Three vehicles: 8 m or more, which on most GTA lots exceeds what is permitted in the front yard.

Walkway alongside: add 900 mm minimum, and 1.2 m if it is the main route to the front door.

The things people forget

Door swing. Measure your actual vehicles with doors open, not the theoretical minimum. SUVs and trucks need more than the numbers above suggest.

Turning space. A long narrow driveway means reversing the full length onto the street. A widened apron near the garage, or a turnaround bay, transforms daily use — and often costs less than widening the whole run.

Snow storage. Where does the snow go? A driveway with garden beds tight on both sides has nowhere to put it, and by February the usable width has shrunk.

Bin day. Two bins and a car should not be mutually exclusive.

What the municipality allows

Every GTA municipality sets a maximum driveway width, usually tied to lot frontage and garage width, and a separate cap on the proportion of the front yard that can be hard surface.

The second one is what stops most widening projects. The width would be permitted; the total front-yard hard surface would not.

Widening at the street also means a curb cut, which is separate municipal approval and separate work.

So the honest sequence is: check what is permitted first, then design within it. Not the other way round.

Widening without widening

Where the front is capped, extending toward the rear of the property is generally far less constrained — a parking pad, a trailer spot, or a turnaround behind the front-yard line.

A turnaround bay in particular delivers most of the daily benefit of a wider driveway for a fraction of the area.
