When should you pave in the GTA?

The season is set by physics, not preference

Asphalt arrives on site at roughly 140°C and has to be spread and compacted before it cools. In cold ambient air it stiffens faster than the roller can work it, and asphalt that was not compacted while workable never reaches proper density.

That is why paving season in the GTA runs roughly April through November. Below about 10°C the working window shrinks to minutes and the risk of a poorly compacted surface rises sharply. Interlock is less temperature-sensitive, but polymeric sand still needs above about 5°C and a dry 24 hours to cure.

Why the shoulder seasons win

Late spring — the ground has thawed, temperatures are mild, and contractors are not yet at peak backlog. You get shorter waits and crews that are not rushing between jobs.

Early fall — the same conditions in reverse, plus the surface has months of moderate weather to cure before its first winter.

Mid-summer is peak demand. Waits are longest, and asphalt laid in extreme heat stays soft for weeks, so you have to be careful with point loads and turning tires.

Late fall is a gamble. It can be fine, and it can also mean the job gets pushed by rain into a week where the temperature drops and it should not be laid at all.

What actually delays a job

Rain is the main one. Asphalt cannot be laid on a wet surface and polymeric sand cannot cure through it. A wet week moves everyone in the queue.

The second is the queue itself. By July most established GTA contractors are booking three to six weeks out. Booking in March for a May slot is the single easiest way to control your own timeline.
