The border is doing more work than it looks.

Job one: edge support

Asphalt at a free edge has nothing supporting it sideways. Tires riding the edge break it away, and the driveway gets narrower every year.

A paver border set on a compacted base with proper edge restraint carries that load. The pavers are individually replaceable and they do not crumble.

On any driveway where the edges have already failed once, a border is the fix that does not simply recreate the original problem.

Job two: a repairable apron

The two metres in front of the garage is where almost every driveway settles first, because that ground was backfilled during construction and rarely compacted properly.

In asphalt, repairing it always leaves a visible seam and a colour difference. In pavers, the affected units lift out, the base gets corrected, and the same pavers go back with no visible repair.

So a paver apron on an otherwise asphalt driveway puts the repairable material exactly where repairs are most likely to be needed.

Job three: it looks considered

A contrasting soldier course frames the surface and gives the eye an edge to read. It is the single cheapest change that makes a plain asphalt driveway look designed rather than installed.

Keep the border colour darker than the field. Light borders show every mark and every winter of salt.

What it costs and how it is built

Priced per linear foot, and a fraction of the cost of converting the whole driveway to interlock.

Construction is the same discipline as any interlock: excavate to depth, compacted granular base, bedding layer, pavers, and a concrete haunch or heavy-duty edging on the outside face so it cannot spread.

A border laid on soil without restraint migrates within a couple of seasons and is worse than no border at all.
